From Botox injections to full face lifts, there are many different cosmetic plastic surgery procedures that can help give the face a more youthful look. However, when people talk about these techniques, those who are not personally dealing with the signs of facial aging will often overlook one extremely important area: the neck. I’ve always found this to be surprising, since changes in the neck are probably the main reason why patients come in to talk with me about facial rejuvenation. Although it may seem, on the surface, to be a relatively simple area, rejuvenation of the neck can actually be quite complex because there are several different issues that can arise there and each has its own distinct solution. As I explain in this video interview I filmed for the Plastic Surgery Channel, I will often employ advanced face lift and fat transfer techniques in combination with a traditional neck lift to achieve the best possible neck rejuvenation results.
As I mention in the video, a fully successful facial rejuvenation not only needs to provide lift and support to the deep structures of the face, but also must address the natural loss of fat volume as well as changes in the texture and pigmentation of the skin. That’s why a neck lift or face lift alone will not always achieve the results patients might want and why facial fat transfer is so important. The appearance of wrinkled, crepey skin that tends to accumulate at the base of the neck, for example, can be much improved by the combination of stem cells and natural growth factors that are present in transferred fat cells. Injecting purified liquid fat (taken via liposuction from elsewhere in the patient’s body) not only reverses skin sagging but also helps restore the health and vitality of the tissues themselves.
During a facial rejuvenation consultation I like to use advanced computer imaging technology as a way of communicating more effectively with the patient. The Vectra® M3 imaging system allows me to obtain three dimensional computer-generated images of the patient from all angles so that we can look at how different techniques will undo the effects caused by aging. Then we can come up with solutions that are tailored around the specific interests of the patient. We can also look over before and after facial rejuvenation photographs of my previous patients, so that you can get a better idea of what to expect.
