Skin Rejuvenation

A variety of procedures can be used to improve the quality of the skin and help correct the changes that occur from aging. Aging creates predictable changes in the skin; Genetics, exposure to sunlight and to other environmental pathogens, and to smoking all are contributing factors.

The aging changes consist of the development of fine lines and deeper lines, pigmentation changes with an accumulation of brown spots and red capillaries, thinning of the skin, prominence of the pores, and loss of skin reflectivity. The areas of the face most affected include the central triangle of the face and left side of the face and neck from sun exposure during driving.

Skin rejuvenation and correction of pigmentation changes can be accomplished in a variety of ways. Topical agents such as Retin – A® and hydroquinone can improve the quality of the skin slowly over a period of 6 to 12 months.

Facial peels making use of a topical application of TCA (trichloroacetic acid) alone or in combination with facial surgery can more quickly improve skin quality and texture than agents such as Retin –A®. While beneficial, facial peels are less effective than resurfacing techniques using lasers. Laser resurfacing permits a calibrated removal of tissue including areas of brown pigmentation enabling a more powerful correction of wrinkles and enlarged pores.

After laser resurfacing, the facial skin can have a rejuvenated appearance that is unlike the outcome of any other technique. Fractionated erbium laser therapy permits correction with less recovery than a fully ablative technique.
